Company story

EKA has manufactured quality knives for more than 100 years

EKA-knivar AB was founded in 1882 by Hadar Hallström, under the name Hadar Hallström Kniffabriks Aktiebolag. In 1917 the company name was changed to Eskilstuna Kniffabriks Aktiebolag - later abbreviated as EKA-knivar AB.

Until the middle of the 20th century Eskilstuna was a real “knife town”. More than 40 factories specialising in knife manufacture resided in the city.

With its focus on quality and its will to develop, EKA managed to stay in the market. Today they are northern Europe’s leading folding knife manufacturer.

Already in the year 1894 the sharpness of the EKA knife was worthy of respect. Messrs. Olsson, Jansson and Berg made a wager as to who, in less than five hours, could most speedily carve through a 12½ inch tree trunk. Olsson won. He was finished in 4 hours. His EKA knife is today framed in EKA’s office in Eskilstuna.

Sandvik steel

The EKA product range comprises several product families. Most knives have blades made from stainless steel. Some models are available with blades of black finished carbon steel.

Sandvik 12C27 is the denomination of the stainless steel used in EKA blades. It is Swedish steel developed by the Sandvik Corporation specifically for knives and surgical instruments.

The knife blades are hardened to 57 - 59 RC to achieve a durable edge that keeps it sharpness. Comparable tests have shown EKA knives to keep the edge sharpness better than most other leading brand knives.

To sharpen the edge we recommend the EKA sharpening steels or UniSharp, Sanson and MiniBlitz sharpeners. Honing is best done with a ceramic stone.

Most EKA folding knives have the blade secured with a screw than can be adjusted to trim the motion of the blade. The knives can also be dissembled for cleaning.

There are today about 130 appointed suppliers and the appointment is a sign for Swedish quality.
